Exciting Progress on the California Campus Construction! Dear UHS Community,
We’re thrilled to share the latest updates on the California Campus construction, where work is progressing smoothly and staying on track for our planned timeline. From the gymnasium's floor installation to the finishing touches in the classrooms, every step brings us closer to unveiling a vibrant new space for our students. We’re excited to show you how these developments are shaping up and highlight the thoughtful planning behind each new feature.
In this edition, we also shine a spotlight on some of the most anticipated additions to the campus, like the Student Commons, which will provide new opportunities for community, creativity, and connection. Plus, get to know a key member of our construction team, whose leadership and dedication are integral to making this project a success. In future editions of the newsletter, we will be including a section devoted to other spaces on our existing campus that are being enlarged and upgraded now that our expansion is imminent.
Thank you for following along with us—we can't wait to share more progress in the months ahead! |

The California Campus construction is making steady progress and staying on track with its timeline. In the gymnasium, work is moving forward smoothly. The backboards, divider curtains, and scoreboards have all been successfully installed, creating the foundation for a functional and vibrant sports space. On the first floor, the restrooms and individual shower rooms are getting their finishing touches. The ceramic floor and wall tiles have been fully installed, giving these areas a clean, polished look. Meanwhile, in the warming kitchen, the walk-in refrigerator has already been installed, with prep tables and sinks set to be added next. In the level 3 science and math classrooms, work has begun on the ceiling framing, and casework installation is also underway. These spaces are already filled with natural light, making them bright and inviting environments for students. Finally, on the level 3 terrace, the team has started applying the plaster wall finish. This work is being completed just in time to protect the structure from any additional winter storms, ensuring the building stays safe and secure throughout the season. Overall, the project is progressing well, and each area is coming together beautifully. |

The Student Commons is a 2,000 square foot space with 15’ ceilings and a variety of seating and furniture to accommodate half the student body during lunch period. The space is connected to an exterior patio overlooking California Street and has great light through south-facing windows. The north side of the space affords a great view of the gym below. The all-electric kitchen will serve hot food and grab-n-go options. The kitchen includes additional cold storage so that more fresh food items can be prepped on-site.

| Alexandra Simmons, Dean of Student Life
"I'm thrilled about the opportunity to provide students with more spaces where they can come together, relax, and create a distinct separation between their lives as students and their identities as teenagers. These updated and additional spaces for eating, gathering, and creating will equip students with tangible tools to better support their mental and physical well-being. |
|
|
Most importantly, I'm excited to see how students will take ownership of these new spaces, making them their own. From establishing new traditions in the Pavilion, to exploring fresh possibilities for creativity in the revamped ULab, to navigating the fun challenge of claiming the ultimate "senior corner," this new building will become a dynamic hub for student life. I'm eager to witness how it will foster connection, creativity, and personal growth among the student community.”

| Scott Tarr, Senior Project Manager at Truebeck Construction
"I have been in the construction industry for nearly 20 years. I enjoy working with Truebeck Construction because this company supports my passion for building very challenging projects while making the journey fun and memorable. Our project team has been engaged with the design team and UHS since 2018. We added value during design through constructability analysis and budgeting support. |

We broke ground in June of 2023 and look forward to delivering the completed project in the spring of 2025. I really enjoy working with our trade and design partners to tackle some of the most challenging projects. This particular project is unique, with a range of challenges—from coordinating deliveries while ensuring public safety on California Street to collaborating with the team to meet specific, one-of-a-kind project requirements. Coming from a family of educators, with my wife Wendy serving as a special education administrator in Petaluma, I’ve always had a passion for building spaces that support education. It’s incredibly rewarding to tour the building with faculty, staff, and students, and hear how the new spaces will improve the learning experience for everyone."

Construction continues on time for a fall, 2025 opening with the possibility for Spring Sports Night to take place in our new gym! The move of many of the school’s programs, people, and departments unlocks space across our existing campus and we are actively working to complete this additional work over the next two summers. Stay tuned for more information about future expansions to include performing arts and fitness centers, as well as new and larger student gathering spaces and a new home for Breakthrough Summerbridge.
